Eva Solo — world brand with roots in Danish design
We are going all the way back to 1913. Here is when the design adventure started for Eva Solo. Today, Jan Engelbrecht is the head of Eva Solo. Jan Engelbrecht is the fourth generation that has carried on the design values, which are so unique at Eva Solo. Jan Engelbrecht’s mother’s name is Eva — and Eva’s father, Jan’s grandfather, is one of Eva Solo’s three earlier directors. It is Jan’s mother — Eva — who has given the name for the company, Eva Solo.
While known brands, like Royal Copenhagen and Georg Jensen, are no longer contained inside the Danish border, the family-owned design house Eva Solo celebrated 100 years anniversary back in 2013. The characteristic designs have in many ways become a synonym for the modern home’s development — the departure point was functional kitchen tools of greatest quality for the stay-at-home mom. It was these products that started the show and created an echo of the brand. Back in 1952, Eva Solo’s bread and spread machine hit the shelves. It was a time when women needed tools that made work in the kitchen easier. The idea that a product had to do more than one thing was supposed to prove long-time use, and Eva Solo has always offered a bit more than what the consumer expects.
Eva Solo started as an agency business in the beginning of 1900 and has since built up its own production of kitchen tools. Kitchen equipment from Eva Solo mirrors a whole century of change in the Danish kitchens. In terms of functionality and design. As opposed to many other Danish design companies, Eva Solo has stayed in Danish hands. Twice Eva Solo has gone from uncle to nephew, also back when Jan Engelbrecht in 1998 bought the company from his uncle, Johan Mangor, after month-long negotiations. There was no family discount.
But for Jan Engelbrecht, it was all worth it. His dream was coming to reality, and Engelbrecht is definitely the right choice for Eva Solo. He saw the potential in the family company and has continued to develop it: “The company is completely different than when I took over. Back then it was said that Denmark is our most important market. But then I just had to say: it is not. The most important market is outside of Denmark. It is a bit more fun, and there are a bit more people out there, to whom we can develop and sell products. That was how I sold the idea to the bank. That we could export much more, and it proved correct”, explains Jan Engelbrecht.
Today, 60% of Eva Solo’s revenue is outside of Denmark, primarily in Sweden, Norway and Germany. Eva Solo also decided — in the middle of the financial crisis — to establish subsidiaries in these countries. Knowing well that there were risks to follow. Eva Solo’s DNA is in Jan Engelbrecht’s veins, and he has gotten the design values with mother’s milk in his childhood. The thought of someone else tampering with his precious company was unbearable for him.
Products from Eva Solo are produced in 14 different countries, and no matter where they are produced, they always go through the capital of Denmark. Eva Solo believes that a design company itself should make sure, that the products live up to the values they preach so much about. That is why all the products go through a number of quality checks at the company in Ballerup (area in the capital region of Denmark), before they sent out into the world. If a product is produced in Germany — like the water bottles from Eva Solo — they first go to Ballerup to be checked. Even if they are to return and be sold on the German market. This process is expensive for the company, but it assures you as a consumer that you always get the highest quality.
Kitchen is no longer just a workshop, where food for family is made — it is often a place that has more character than the greatest showrooms. It does not mean that we no longer need functionality and usability. Eva Solo products are the perfect mix of this, together with innovative Danish design. Tools Design
Tools Design is a company that was founded in 1989 by designers Claus Jensen and Henrik Holdbæk. Ole Palsby
The author of the iconic pots and pans in Eva Trio series. The series was created in 1977, when Ole Palsby chose to use three different materials in the same product, which together gave the optimal properties. Hence the name Eva Trio. He also showed completely new ways of Danish design with his characteristic handles. Design from Eva Trio has received a ton of design prizes through the years, and the series has become a true design classic.
3PART
Simon Skafdrup is an educated industrial designer from the Architecture school in Aarhus and is behind 3PART. 3PART is working in conflicting field between research, innovation and design and finds inspiration by going behind the way of living. The goal is to discover the hidden and give it a new functional and aesthetic form, based on the simple Scandinavian design tradition. 3PART has not only received a lot of recognition in Denmark, but also in Europe, USA and Asia.
