Welcome to Kähler at Coolshop
In 2008 the architect Frantz Longhi Kähler takes over, and here starts the fairytale about design and food brand Kähler. Kähler is revived as a modern Nordic ceramic business, whose ceramic products win design hearts of large parts of Scandinavia.
In 2010 Kähler opens a flagship store in Aarhus, Kähler and friends, and then four restaurants follow. Kähler Food salon opens on the heart of Aarhus in 2010, on the other side of the street, shortly after Kähler’s Coffee and Food Station opens, then Kähler Villa Dining opens in a beautiful old mansion in Risskov outside of Aarhus, and in the summer 2011 Kähler opens in Tivoli in Copenhagen.
In 1839 Herman J. Kähler moved from Northern Germany to Næstved. Shortly after his arrival in 1839 he started his pottery in Kindhestegade in Næstved, and here is where the Kähler history was founded. Herman J. Kähler is an educated potter, and with the old traditions he produces everyday use objects like bowls, buckets and pickle jars. However, he is first recognized for his production of furnaces. Herman J. Kähler runs Kähler from 1839 to 1872. In this period he gets 7 children, 2 of whom, Herman August and Carl Frederik, run the business afterwards.
After the old Kähler retires in 1872, two brothers, Herman August Kähler and Carl Frederik Kähler take over the company. The brothers share the production between the two of them. Carl Frederik continues the production of pottery in Kindhestegade, but it is Herman August who sets Kähler’s ceramics on the global plan. After having finished learning from his father, Herman August receives lessons in glaze painting at Holmegaard Glass factory. Here he learns that playing with clay is not completely safe, when he gets a serious poisoning, after he gets the glaze too close to his lunch box. After the stay at Holmegaard he is sent out to the world, as the most craftsmen were at that time. He travels around in Europe and works at factories in Berlin, Strasbourg and Paris. In 1867 he returns home to Næstved, full of impressions and inspiration. Now he is definitely ready to take over the factory. Already in 1875 he builds a new factory, which today is known as Kähler’s Hill. Here he really tries his strength at artistic shaping and experimenting with glazing. This artistic direction attracts many known Danish artists, and Herman August Kähler starts the artists’ colony in Næstved. As a ceramist, Herman August has his own language. His shapes were for the most part simple and without many ribs. His main interests were glazes and coatings, and they had to have flat smooth surfaces to look right. Even though he was diligent with the pottery turntable, he used the most time to make models for the sculptor Karl Hansen Reistrup. Overall, he was a better entrepreneur than artist. The glazes became his trade mark, especially the red glaze. It was usually used only for decoration, but at the world exhibition in Paris in 1889 he presented a product, dipped completely into the metallic red glaze. Together with his signature, HAK, the red glaze became Kähler’s trade mark. Herman August Kähler was also the one to create an international interest for Kähler Ceramics. He participated in exhibitions all over the world, which attracted traders’ and museums’ interest in Paris, New York, Chicago, Malmø, Stockholm, Bruxelles, Berlin and San Francisco. Herman August Kähler meant a lot for Kähler business. Even today, his initials, HAK, are still stamped on the bottom of all Kähler products.
In 1917 Herman H.C. Kähler took over the company after his father, Herman August Kähler. The time and tastes have changed, and the figures, like lions eating lunch or unshaped vases and jugs in strong colours, are not in demand as much. Instead Herman H.C. goes back to the old pottery traditions and begins to produce wheel-thrown objects decorated with the old technique, cow horn painting. His style was modern, but with this own personal interpretation. Herman H.C.’s big strength was that he tried to inspire and motivate the skilled painting ladies to challenge the different decoration techniques. In spite of him being one of the Kähler family’s biggest designers, and the fact that it was his artistic fantasies that pushed the factory to new decorative adventures, that is not the picture people in the following years had of him. That is why Herman H.C. is not considered to be an especially significant person, maybe because he had trouble living up to his father’s, Herman August Kähler’s, big credit. At the same time, there were also many big artists at the factory in the same period, and they were not as timid as Herman H.C. Kähler.
Nils Kähler takes over the factory in 1940 together with his brother, Herman Jørgen Kähler. It is the last generation of Kähler family that was ever in charge of the company. Both brothers worked as designers, but in general it was Nils who took over the artistic function, and Herman J. took over the administrative and practical function. Nils Kähler gets named “the young Kähler”. Both him and his brother have been at the factory numerous times as kids. They have also received most of their education and training here. In 1931 Nils replaces the company’s old potter’s wheels. He develops a passion for wheel-throwing big vases. Just for fun he begins to model piggy banks and other animals. It was normally the apprentice’s job, but the idea with the animals as parts of collection got taken seriously and put into production. These animals became some of the most popular in Kähler history. The animals allowed to express Nils’ fondness for horn-painted wet decorations and lead glaze. Nils Kähler had a skill of following the time’s requests for design, which can be clearly seen in production. Even though he was infatuated with the old pottery, the production had simple forms. He presented everyday use art, for example, ashtrays, vases, cans and lamp stands for the Le Klint lamps. They were produced in stoneware, raw and without glaze, with his preferred salt glaze or the strong turquoise colour. With the 4th generation of Kähler family the era of family-driven company ends in 1974. Through more than 130 years Kähler was a business that was a gathering point for the time’s known artists.

But when Kähler was a somewhat older company with one factory, there were painting ladies, as they were called, and they painted every single piece of ceramic that came from the artists. Painting ladies from Kähler had to be the best of the best, because they needed to be able to paint precisely and in an elegant way on all types of ceramic products they got. They also tried to give life to the products that came from designers/artists. They were extremely important for the Kähler you see today. Kähler’s ceramic got a fantastic charm, because they looked so unique and were handmade. Painting ladies worked at Kähler from before 1900s and long into the 1900s. Without them the products might not have managed so well. It is just another thing that really supports the fact that people love a good and honest piece of crafts. Kähler achieved enormous success because of the skilled designers and painting ladies.
